MotoGP Comes To The US And There’s An App For It (Of Course)

12__GIX2525.mediagallery_output_image_[1920x1080]Race fans, start your engines! Today marks the start of the Red Bull US Grand Prix - the first stop in the US of the MotoGP series - at the world renowned Laguna Seca raceway. For those unfamiliar, MotoGP is the pinnacle of motorcycle racing and the equivalent of F1 but on two wheels. By now you're probably wondering why a racing series - much less a motorcycle racing series - is on TechCrunch, right? For starters, the prototype motorbikes racing in MotoGP are purpose-built and the technology used in these bikes eventually make there way down to production bikes that you and I can purchase. More importantly, the technology (fuel efficiency, anti-wheelie, etc.) that's being refined by the likes of Honda, Yamaha and Ducati make the bikes we purchase safer and more reliable. Not quite the technology we normally cover on TechCrunch but important nonetheless.

Aleix Espargaró and Randy De Puniet continue to dominate new MotoGP class

Randy De Puniet Laguna Seca 2012

Free practice for the USGP got underway at the legendary Laguna Seca circuit today with the MotoGP class supported on track by national championships as opposed to the usual Moto3 and Moto2 support categories. Dani Pedrosa set the pace in both sessions, followed in each by the same order of Lorenzo, Stoner, Spies, Dovizioso and Crutchlow. With ideal temperatures of around 20ºC the lap times were already inside the records from 2010 on an impressive opening day of action that was interrupted by a red flag with ten minutes remaining after a crash for Rossi caused damage to the air fences.

Once again there was very little to separate the POWER ELECTRONICS Aspar pair of Aleix Espargaró and Randy de Puniet, the Spaniard edging out his French team-mate by just 0.035 seconds as the fastest CRT on track. Aleix improved by a massive 1.5 seconds between the two sessions whilst Randy's pace was up even more, by three seconds, after some technical setbacks during the morning outing. The pair lie eleventh and twelfth fastest respectively overnight with two MotoGP prototypes behind them.

11th Aleix Espargaró 1.23.835 (39 laps): “This is a totally new circuit for us with no prior data and the electronics didn't work as we'd hoped this morning. We reset them for the afternoon and the improvement was notable. I am happy with the first day but we'll try to keep improving tomorrow. In Italy we thought we'd struggle to compete with the MotoGP prototypes because of the long straight but we were closer than we expected and here it is the opposite. It is a slow and short circuit and we are some way off the top lap times. We have to improve power in the bottom three gears. We are using the same chassis that we tested at Mugello so we'll see if we can get more out of it tomorrow. I really like the Corkscrew but personally I am more impressed by the elevation change at the end of the main straight.”

12th Randy De Puniet 1.23.870 (31 laps): “It hasn't been a smooth landing for us here at Laguna Seca, due to some electronic problems that held us back this morning. Luckily we were able to fix them for the second session. We worked against the clock to improve the engine braking and even though I am still not completely confident with the bike here I am sure we can get back to 100% tomorrow because we have so much room to improve. Despite the problems I feel optimistic because of the way we worked things out. Tomorrow we will keep working on the electronics and the gearbox. This track is so different to anywhere else and there is a lot of work to do.”

Casey Stoner Struggled with Soft Tyre Stability

Casey Stoner Laguna Seca 2012

Casey Stoner finished day 1 practice at Laguna on the top 3 result. With the new engine, Stoner set 1'21.457 at the end of the FP2.

Casey Stoner:
"It hasn't been a particularly eventful day, we didn't really get the package we were hoping for. We struggled a little this morning with stability on the soft tyre; we improved it slightly this afternoon on the hard tyre but found the bike to be quite aggressive and there wasn't much grip. We have a few things to try tomorrow morning; if we can make some small improvements then we'll be very happy with the bike. As it is now, we need to improve before we can say if we're competitive or not."

Yamaha Does Another MotoGP Video for Laguna Seca

Yamaha USA is keeping its Laguna Seca video tradition alive and well with another short flick that features the company’s MotoGP riders. Headlined by Jorge Lorenzo, Ben Spies, Cal Crutchlow, and Andrea Dovizioso, the Yamaha foursome is joined by MotoGP commentators Nick Harris and Gavin Emmett. Not quite the comedic gold we’ve seen in the past, there is a tongue-in-cheek element to watching the video knowing that Spies dropped the bombshell about his leaving Yamaha, ...

Karel Abraham on 16th place after Friday

Karel Abraham Laguna Seca 2012

After the longer-term hand injury recovery is Karel Abraham back in the saddle of his motorbike and he took part in Friday´s free parctices to U.S. Grand Prix at Laguna Seca. Abraham ended the first free practice on thirteenth place with the best lap time of 1'25,215 and the loss 3,791 sec on the leader Pedrosa. The afternoon practice was influenced by a short break due to the technical problems at the track. The Czech rider was able to improve his time of almost 0,4 sec. However he finished on 16th place with the loss 3,761 sec on the day winner Dani Pedrosa.

Karel Abraham
"The condition of my hand after the injury seems to be good. I still can feel some kind of pressure and armor in my fingers, especially while braking, but it´s not really a big problem now. I think I will be able to go all race with no restrictions. Maybe I will take some pain killer tabletes before. We haven´t changed anything on bike´s setting today and we tried just the one bike. I feel quite uneasy at the moment, it is difficult after so long pause. I´m glad to be back and hope that tomrrow we will be one step better"

Marco Grana, Chef Mechanic Cardion AB Motoracing
"We did not make any changes on bike´s setting today. We started with the one which is much comfortable for our rider. He had to adapt to the racing again and set in motion after the long-term hand injury. I hope tomorrow will be time to try both bikes and make some improvement of settings for the race."

Toni Elias will Ride the Pramac Ducati Bike for the Laguna Seca Round

Hector Barbera Mugello 2012

After a trip of eight races around the European soil, the MotoGP World Championship riders take their second intercontinental fly of the season this weekend to the Red Bull US Grand Prix.

The iconic Laguna Seca circuit in California is ready to welcome the only the Premier Class paddock (the Moto2 and 125cc classes sitting this event out), for the first of the two US rounds on the 2012 calendar.

Unfortunately, the Pramac Racing Team rider Héctor Barberà will miss out on this first American round, due to his recent training incident when he fractured the left fibula and tibia. Héctor underwent successful surgery at the Instituto Universitario USP Dexeus last Sunday. The unlucky Spaniard, these days has began the rehabilitation and, reasonably, he will be able to run a race in 4 or 6 weeks, as Doctor Mir, a specialist surgeon who carried out the operation, said after the surgery.

Héctor will be replace by the Spaniard rider Tony Elias, who already rode for the Pramac Racing Team in 2008, achieving two amazing podiums in Brno and in Misano.
The 29-years old rider made his international racing debut in the 125cc World Championship in 2000, finishing 3rd in 2001 and taking his first win in the Dutch TT at the prestigious Assen circuit.
In the following years, Tony was able to clinch to the inaugural Moto2 World Championship at the Malaysian Grand Prix with three rounds to spare.
This year, Tony was riding with the Aspar Racing Team aboard on Suter machine in Moto2 class but both sides have announced that they were at the point of parting ways. Therefore Elias, until few days ago, was a rider without a bike to run with. Now he has the opportunity to show his potential for a race, at the spectacular Laguna Seca circuit.

Laguna Seca sits on the side of a hill just outside the coastal town of Monterey, a couple of hours south of San Francisco. The sometimes intense dry heat, unpredictable asphalt and anti-clockwise layout provide a break from the norm and the riders are forced to adapt their style somewhat after a summer on the fast and wide European tracks. The track boasts some of the most spectacular elevation changes and dramatic corners on the World Championship circuits, the most notorious of which is the infamous ‘corkscrew.'

During this American weekend, Tony will get the support of two very important and special guests of the Pramac Racing Team: Chris MacClugage and his wife, Rachel.
Mr. MacClugage is considered the best jet sky rider ever and it is demonstrated by the fifteenth World Jet Sky Championship that he won during his amazing career. And to be a World Champions is also familiar to his wife Rachel, who won a Jet Sky World Championship Title in 2009.
This year the winning MacClugage’s family will arrive on Friday, coming with their first heir, Little Mac to support and root for the Green Energy Team.

Guest Story: Trackday at Laguna Seca with Moto2 World Champion and MotoGP rider, Stefan Bradl

2012 is Stefan Bradl's rookie season in MotoGP, and as such, he faces many challenges. There's the difficulties of dealing with the power of a MotoGP bike, the complications of handling the sophisticated electronics used in the class, and there's the Bridgestone tires to master. Another problem that is sometimes overlooked for MotoGP rookies is having to learn a new and demanding circuit, the complex layout of the Laguna Seca track. As the junior classes (now Moto2 and Moto3, previously 125cc and 250cc) do not visit Laguna Seca due to space and noise constraints, rookies face the double challenge of learning the circuit and finding a way to manhandle a MotoGP bike around it. The the track is featured on many MotoGP computer games, the elevation changes and camber of the track make it much harder to learn.

To alleviate some of the problems of learning the circuit, Stefan Bradl decided to use a public trackday to learn his way around. Adam Silver, keen racing fan and trackday enthusiast, learned that Bradl would be riding at Laguna, and went along to join the fun. Below is his account of the day Stefan Bradl followed him around Laguna.

Whither Valentino? Just Where Will Rossi End Up Racing In 2013 And Beyond?

It has been an intense week or so for speculation about the next and biggest cog in MotoGP's Silly Season merry-go-round. The question of Valentino Rossi's future has filled the media, with multiple sometimes conflicting stories appearing in the international press. That Rossi should dominate the headlines is logical. After all, with Casey Stoner retiring, and the futures of Jorge Lorenzo, Dani Pedrosa and Marc Marquez all settled, Rossi's decision will determine not just where he lands, but to a massive degree who will fill the rest of the seats in MotoGP next year.

Rossi's choice is fairly straightforward: he can elect to stay at Ducati and hope that Filippo Preziosi can provide him with a competitive bike soon; he can take up the offer he is believed to have from Yamaha to join the factory team; or he can accept a ride with a satellite Honda team aboard a full-factory RC213V. During his daily briefing with the press at each race weekend, Rossi has suggested that his primary focus is to stay with Ducati and make the Desmosedici competitive. Yet all of the news stories in the past 10 days have been suggesting that Rossi is close to signing a deal with Yamaha, with the sponsors backing the deal varying depending on the source.

Crutchlow and Dovizioso complete successful Mugello test

Cal Crutchlow Mugello Test 2012

Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team riders Cal Crutchlow and Andrea Dovizioso completed a positive test session at the Mugello circuit in Italy today.

Hot and humid conditions enabled Crutchlow and Dovizioso to focus on a range of set-up options with their YZR-M1 machinery and both were able to post competitive times inside the top six.

Crutchlow concentrated on improving his feeling with a full fuel tank to help him be faster in the early stages of races in the second half of the 2012 Mo toGP World Championship. The British rider also experimented with different geometry settings and he was satisfied with progress made having set the fifth quickest time.

The 26-year-old's best lap of 1.47.750 was only 0.315s behind Jorge Lorenzo's best pace and Crutchlow managed to improve on his best lap set in yesterday's Mugello race by an impressive 0.7s.

Dovizioso spent his time on track experimenting with different geometry settings and also working on adapting his riding style to improve his mid-corner speed on the YZR-M1 machine.

The Italian, who claimed a fantastic fourth podium finish in the last five races in yesterday's 23-lap Gran Premio d'Italia TIM encounter, set a best time of 1.47.775 to finish in sixth position. His best time was 0.5s faster than his quickest pace in yesterday's race and he was happy with improvements to the front-end feeling of his YZR-M1.

Cal Crutchlow – 5th 1.47.750 – 50 laps:
“I am feeling pretty tired now because it has been a hectic period in the Championship and today it was very hot. But it was a good test and it gave me the chance to work on the bike for the beginning of the race. Each time I went out I had a full fuel tank and we definitely made some progress. I can still improve but I will be going to Laguna Seca confident that I will be faster in the first part of the race. This season I have been really strong as the race has gone on, so we need to work on improving my speed right from the off. We worked on a few different settings and it was interesting to understand how they affected the bike and that will give us some options in the second part of the season."

Andrea Dovizioso 6th 1.47.775 – 38 laps:
“Today we just concentrated on trying modifications to the set-up that we don't normally have time to experiment with on a race weekend. We changed the geometry of the bike to help me understand some different options for the future and we definitely improved the bike from yesterday's race. We made the bike better on the front-end to help enter the corner better and the good thing is the changes we made should help at the next race in Laguna Seca. I also worked a little on my riding style with the YZR-M1 and now I am even more confident for Laguna Seca where I'm sure I can be battling for another podium.”

Toni Elias To Replace Hector Barbera At Laguna Seca

Toni Elias has been drafted in to replace the injured Hector Barbera at Laguna Seca. The Spaniard had recently parted ways with the Aspar team in Moto2, meaning he was immediately available to take the ride, and given Elias' prior experience with the team - Elias rode for the squad back in 2008 - and with the Bridgestone tires, Elias was the obvious candidate.

The Pramac team had a prior agreement with Kenny Noyes, the former Moto2 rider currently contesting the Spanish Moto2 championship, as permanent replacement rider. In the end, the American lost out to Elias on the basis of the Spaniard's previous experience with both the Bridgestone tires and the Ducati Desmosedici. Despite Elias' obvious struggles with the Bridgestone tires last season, both Ducati and Pramac must be hoping that the new, softer construction Bridgestones will be kinder to Elias' style than their 2011 predecessors. More importantly, perhaps, Elias' experience with the bike and the tires makes him less likely to crash expensively at the tricky Laguna Seca circuit.
