Rossi and Hayden's Progress Slows in Qualifying

Valentino Rossi Assen 2012

On a day marked by shifting weather conditions, with rain periodically interrupting the track time, Nicky Hayden and Valentino Rossi both slightly improved their lap times from yesterday, but not by as much as they would have liked. Tomorrow, Hayden and Rossi will start from the ninth and tenth spots on the grid, respectively.

Nicky Hayden (Ducati Team) 9th (1:34.751)
“The weather was obviously very strange, but that’s something everybody has to deal with. During the first exit, I did a 34.9 with the hard tyre, and as I was fourth at the time, I thought maybe we could do something good today. Then the rain came and I lost the feeling a little bit. In the last exit, with a soft tyre, I managed to improve by a couple of tenths, but it clearly wasn’t enough. I’m not happy. I can’t say I left a lot out there, but even a tenth would have moved me up a couple of spots. With the group in front of me going fast and consistent, 26 laps around here definitely won’t be easy, but we’ll try to understand something and see what tomorrow brings.”

Valentino Rossi (Ducati Team) 10th (1:35.057)
“Today obviously didn’t go as well as yesterday. Unfortunately, we tried to make a few adjustments in an effort to get the tyre to slide less, but as soon as we load the rear a bit, the bike becomes difficult to ride because I lose a lot of grip on the front. We tried it this morning and a little in the afternoon, but in the end we returned to yesterday’s settings. We were also a bit unlucky with the weather, as I had three soft tyres to use in qualifying, but because of the various rain breaks, I was only able to use one. With this setup, maybe I can be a bit more competitive in the first part of the race, but then we’ll have to see what pace we’re able to do when the tyres start sliding a lot.”

Third Row for Bautista, Fifth for Pirro

Alvaro Bautista Assen 2012

Alvaro Bautista was unable to follow up his promising free practice form with anything more than an eighth place start in tomorrow's Dutch TT after qualifying this afternoon was interrupted for the Spaniard first by a rain shower and then by a crash. Even though the riders were able to return to the drying track once the shower had passed it certainly didn't help the Team San Carlo Honda Gresini rider, who at least has the race pace to suggest he can make up positions tomorrow. Michele Pirro continued to close the gap to the pair of Aprilias currently leading the CRT chase, the Italian setting a solid race pace to suggest he can cause them a problem in tomorrow's race.

Alvaro Bautista ( 8th 1’ 34” 722 ) "It was a shame about the crash because we did such a good job this morning and our pace was strong. This afternoon the rain came first, which set us back, and then when I went back out and tried to push I lost the front and crashed, which cost me a lot of grid positions. The good thing is we are fast and our rhythm is good so we just have to try and get a good start, make up positions as quickly as possible and not lose contact with the front guys."

Michele Pirro (14th 1’ 36” 647) "We lost half of the session to the rain this afternoon and that didn't help us but we have closed the gap a little to the two best CRT bikes and this is positive. Obviously we still have some things to do, especially to solve a bad vibration, but I'm sure the team can help resolve it tomorrow and put me in a position to be fighting to be the top CRT."

Fausto Gresini "It was a shame because we had been enjoying a good weekend up until this afternoon and we could have done without the crash. Unfortunately he dropped several positions and it doesn't do his true potential justice. Obviously the rain didn't help either but now we have to look to the warm-up tomorrow, make some final improvements and then hope to make a good start and recover positions in the race. Michele did well despite a small technical problem but I believe our engineers can give him the bike to put on a strong performance tomorrow."

Trackside Tuesday: Patience is a Virtue

One of the great things about the support classes in Grand Prix motorbike racing is the depth of the competition. While there are a handful of favorites in each class, we generally don’t have the Three Alien situation of MotoGP. Once a rider leaves that broader talent and equipment pool for the premier class however, his potential results are limited by the bike he lands on. Alvaro Bautista paid his dues for two years on ...

2012 Assen MotoGP FP3 Result: Pedrosa Tops Rain-Affected Session

Dani Pedrosa topped a rain-hit practice session on Friday morning, leading the session once the brief rain shower which hit in the early part of practice had passed. The shower passed quickly, leaving the track fairly dry, with just a few wet patches, one of which caught Casey Stoner out, the Repsol Honda man suffering a huge highside on a damp patch at De Bult. Stoner was slow to get up, but eventually rejoined the session, ending in 6th.

Jorge Lorenzo finished in 2nd, just behind Pedrosa, and ahead of San Carlo Gresini's Alvaro Bautista. Despite his still painful ankle, Cal Crutchlow put his Monster Tech 3 Yamaha into 4th, ahead of teammate Andrea Dovizioso and the banged up Stoner. Stefan Bradl posted the 7th fastest time on the LCR Honda, ahead of the Ducatis of Nicky Hayden and Hector Barbera, while Ben Spies rounded out the top 10.

The final standings in the session did not carry that much significance, however. The mixed conditions meant that placings were determined to some extent by timing and the willingness to push. After seeing Casey Stoner crash so badly, there may have been some riders building in a small safety margin.

Falling Crowd Numbers Force Assen To Contemplate Major Changes

The Dutch TT at the legendary Assen circuit could be facing major changes over the next few years. Falling spectator numbers are forcing the board of the TT Circuit Assen to take a long look at the event to try and turn the tide. The organizers have even gone so far as to put the day of the race up for discussion, and move the event from Saturday to Sunday in future years. Moving race day from Saturday to Sunday is just one of the changes under consideration for the oldest event on the MotoGP calendar - the race has been held near the Dutch city of Assen since 1925, and has been on the Grand Prix calendar since 1949, the year the series was formally inaugurated.

2012 Silverstone Moto2 Race Report: Don't Get Mad, Get Even

Pol Espargaró came back from darkness into the winner’s spotlight in a matter of days, thanks to his lonely and extraordinary Moto2 win at Silverstone. «Smart» Pol –do not confuse with Ducati rider Paul Smart- left Barcelona injured, with no points and witnessing how arch rival Marc Márquez was leaving with the same 16 points that Pol was fighting for when he crashed at Montmeló.

Espargaro may not be the most technical rider on the grid, neither does he speak the best English. However, you can be sure he has the strongest spirit among riders in the intermediate class. It would have been natural to be furious after being taken out by Marquez in Barcelona. But Espargaró was very well advised by HP Tuenti team Boss Sito Pons and chose the opposite and toughest way of overcoming his setback. Just dedicating a few nice words to his Catalunya Caixa rival and then focusing on proving at Silverstone he is as quick as the fastest rider on the track. Watching Espargaró in the last few seasons brings to my mind that old racing cliché: You can't teach a slow rider to produce a talent he does not have, but fortunately you can teach a skilled rider to be smarter or avoid mistakes. That’s what Espargaró and the HP Tuenti team have achieved this season.
